Welcome to District 8B

What experiences have you had in implementing HB 1151?
In case you are not sure what HB 1151 is, it is an act of legislation put into place during the summer of 2006 that provides 5 hours of planning time per week as well as an unspecified amount of duty free lunch each week..

    Duty Free Lunch Coverage
We have approximately 500 students in our facility, serving K-5. Our classroom teachers are given duty free lunch on Tuesdays and Thursdays since there are fewer interruptions and holidays. First grade, second grade, and third grade is covered by their assistants for their 30 minute lunch. Kindergarten assistants and 3 certified teachers that cover Kindergarten. 2 certified teachers cover fourth grade. 4 certified teachers cover 5th grade. This schedule was put together by our SIT and approved by our staff, but required a lot of effort from the NCAE AR, who coincidently serves on the SIT.
We have the following teaching staff:
    4 Kindergarten w/ 4 assistants
    5 First Grade w/ 5 assistants
    4 Second Grade w/ 2 assistants
    4 Third Grade w/ 2 assistants
    3 Fourth Grade
    4 Fifth Grade

Other Certified Staff – These individuals cover the classroom teachers on Tuesday and Thursday.
    1 Music, 1 Art, 1 PE, 1 Media, 1 Technology, 2 Title I, 1 Guidance

    Non-instructional planning time
Every classroom has music, art, and PE one day a week, the fourth resource class is a rotation of one of those three, the fifth day is covered by a teacher assistant. This gives teachers 5 – 45minute planning periods. An additional 25 minutes is available from 255-320 each day, providing there is no staff meeting or afternoon duty.
We are not at 100%, but we have made significant gains.

We have had a difficult time developing a plan. Our K-5 school is on a fixed schedule. Our TAs' schedules are stretched - as are the teachers'. The PTA parents do a lot for us and asking them to cover lunches on a regular basis would be taking unfair advantage. If there is another school in this situation that has worked out an efficient plan, please let us know.
